Family and friends are often in an excellent position to recognize behavioral changes in your student. In the event that you notice your student is in distress, Student Outreach and Support is a resource that can assist them in getting the support and care they need.

Student Outreach and Support (SOS) intentionally collaborates with students and professionals’ partners to optimize individual health and wellbeing.

  • Helps students identify barriers to success: These barriers to success may be academic, but may also include mental health concerns, financial concerns, or personal concerns
  • Provides students with support and linkage with on/off campus resource(s).
  • Works with students to develop a strengths-based action plan.
  • Assists student to meet goals and objectives to reduce stress.
  • Serves as an advocate for students as they try to navigate university processes.

Services we provide:

  • Initial Screening: Initial screening is a student direct-care holistic assessment intended to gather information about what are areas of the student’s life might be impacting their ability to be academically success and/or the overall health and wellness. The initial screening is required for all support coordination services.
  • Check-in follow-up appointments: Check-in appointment(s) occur after the initial screening. It is a follow up meeting with the student for continued support. collaboratively working with the student to accomplish the student’s goals to reduce barriers and stress impacting the student’s overall health and wellness.
  • A Post-Hospital (Return to class) appointments: Post-hospitalization, behavioral health admission, is a USF systems requirement for all students under USF system policy USF6.0163 “SOCAT Health and Wellness Interventions”. Support Coordinators will ensure the student has proper supports in place to transition back to classes smoothly.
  • Follow-up monitoring plan: Follow up monitoring is a non-direct service with a goal of monitoring the student’s success for two consecutive semesters post referral. This is completed electronically by sending Check-in emails to the student, monitoring grades to access for risk factors of academic decline, and check for registration.

FERPA and our office:
There are situations that arise throughout the academic year when parents need to get involved or seek help for their students. Due to FERPA regulations, it can be difficult for parents to get answers or assistance on behalf of their student. Please know that our office will do the following:

  • We will always listen and hear your concern.
  • We address parental involvement with students we help, but the decision remains theirs.
  • If the situation is emergent, we have the authority to complete parental notification.

SOS: Helpful Parents and Families
Parents can help:

  • When concern arises about their student, and not sure who to call for help.
  • Post-vention response to an emergent situation (ex. their student is missing, has been hospitalized, or needs to withdraw from the university)
  • Has general questions about navigating the university.
  • Needs assistance bridging the communication gap between multiple offices. Please use this link for any concerns you may have
